Airline KLM says it has added Cancun to its network of destinations for the upcoming winter season. It has just announced its new route from Amsterdam to Cancun from November 2, 2021 to March 26, 2022.

There will be 3 flights per week, on a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. Starting May 26, you can make fight bookings through travel agencies or online.

Quintana Roo state authorities welcomed the announcement as it means a significant increase in the number of tourists and, consequently, in attracting foreign currency, they said in a statement.

“We are very pleased to announce Cancun as a new KLM destination in our winter flight schedule. KLM will now offer its clients, all over the world, a new possibility to enjoy the beautiful state of Quintana Roo and the Yucatan Peninsula.

“Once again, we reinforce our offer and our commitment to Mexico thanks to this new route. At KLM we are prepared to take our passengers to their destination in a completely safe and responsible way. We have at your disposal a flexible travel policy and the highest standard of hygiene,” said Maud Oostenbrink, commercial director of Air France-KLM in Mexico.

The company says the new direct Amsterdam to Cancun flight will begin November 2, 2021 and run until March 26, 2022. The flights will land at the Cancun International Airport three times per week in a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner.

A big focus on one-stops

Besides Cancun, KLM will have several new routes this winter. The new destinations are:

  • Orlando: starting November 4th; four-weekly with B787-9s
  • Mombasa: starting November 4th; twice-weekly with B787-9s
  • Phuket: starting November 1st; four-weekly by B777-300ERs
  • Cancun: starting November 2nd; three-weekly with B787-9s
  • Barbados: starting November 1st; three-weekly with A330-200/300s
  • Port of Spain: starting November 1st; three-weekly with A330-200/300s

Some of these markets had strong point-to-point demand in 2019, although this says nothing of yields. Amsterdam-Cancun had about 87,000 round-trip P2P passengers.

Only the route Amsterdam to Cancun will operate non-stop in both directions. It will be a fully standalone service that won’t continue anywhere else. This isn’t too surprising given the high P2P demand in 2019  and connecting demand.

KLM will see head-to-head competition from TUI fly Netherlands to Cancun, although its website shows that it is presently bookable until early November.
