Despite an increase in covid-19 infections, the state of Quintana Roo has experienced a satisfactory tourist recovery. With the reactivation in June 2020, the Cancun International Airport will have 42 routes from the United States alone for the second half of 2021, up from 32 in the first half of the year.

Quintana Roo received more than 7 million passengers last year, according to data from the Strategic Planning Directorate of the Quintana Roo Tourism Promotion Council (CPTQ), which estimates that only in the second half of 2021 it will reach 6 million passengers based on promotion measures and strategies.

According to El Economista, the three airports of Quintana Roo: Cancun, Cozumel, and Chetumal currently have an average of 470 daily operations, with passenger arrivals from the United States, Germany, France, Spain, Great Britain, Portugal, Russia, Poland, and Turkey, as well as Belize, Bogotá, Brazil, Costa Rica, Panama, Peru, Punta Cana, and Venezuela.

According to REPORTUR.mx, the percentage of occupancy that Cancun hotels maintain is also favored by the growth of tourism to the destination, with an average of 60.9 percent, which benefited from an increase of more than two percentage points, while the Riviera Maya fell from 56.2 percent to 55.7 percent in less than a week; and Cozumel also increases its occupancy to 52.7 percent from 50. (Despite the cap, Cancun and the Riviera Maya have more than half-full rooms.)

Hotel occupancy for May 2021 reported an average of 53.3% and Cancun, Puerto Morelos and Isla Mujeres 58%, said Darío Flota Ocampo, director of the Quintana Roo Tourism Promotion Council (CPTQ).
