How to be a real hero with blood donation

Human blood has no substitute and we can’t manufacture it . The only way it to obtain it is through a generous donation. Many people are reluctant to make their first blood donation. However, once they do, they find the donation process to be easy and gratifying.

General guidelines for blood donation

  • Be in good general health and feeling well.
  • Not have been ill in the last 14 days.
  • Be at least 18 years old and up to 65 years old.
  • Not have been under treatment of acupuncture, root canal, tattoos or piercings in the last 12 months.
  • Weight at least 50 kilos.
  • Not have had surgery in the last 6 months.
  • Show a current official form of identification with photo.
  • Not have taken medication in the last 5 days.
  • Avoid eating at least 4 hours before, but do not exceed 8 hours without eating.
  • Avoid eating greasy food 24 hours before donation (such as eggs, milk and dairy).
  • Stay hydrated.
  • Not have been vaccinated in the last 30 days.
  • Not have drunk alcoholic beverages 72 hours prior to donation.
  • Women should not be pregnant, during their period or breastfeeding.

The requirements here mentioned are the minimal requirements donors must meet to be eligible to donate blood. The medical staff of the blood bank will assess other particular situations.

Wearing comfortable clothes with short sleeves is recommended.

Some myths v. facts about blood donation

  • Myth: Donating blood hurts.
  • Fact: The pain experienced is no more than a needle prick. Focus on the lives that you can be helping from just a slight pinch and few seconds of discomfort.

 

  • Myth: It is unhealthy to give blood away.
  • Fact: They will only about 450 ml. of blood during a donation session. There is enough blood in the body to donate it without any ill effects. The body makes new blood after donation.

 

  • Myth: Vegetarians cannot be donors.
  • Fact: Vegetarians can donate blood. You will take the iron needed from body stores and will replace it after donation once you maintain a balanced diet.
