Through the Clean Beaches Program 2021, the Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris) announced the result of clean beaches in Mexico. It determined that only one of the 199 beaches they surveyed is not fit for recreational use in the country.

According to the organization, they analyzed a total of 199 beaches out of 57 tourist locations in the 17 coastal states. Playa Hermosa in Ensenada, Baja California, is the only one that did not pass this test. Beaches in destinations such as Cancun and Los Cabos passed with no problems.

They tested the presence of enterococci, which are microorganisms that indicate whether or not water is acceptable for recreational use. There is a procedure establishing the limit value of 200. A beach with less than 200 enterococci is suitable for recreational use, while those with more than 200 are not.

They also said that it was not possible to analyze 72 beaches, 69 due to weather circumstances and three owing to technical difficulties. The presence of hurricanes Dolores and Enrique hampered the analysis of 69 beaches in Guerrero, Jalisco, Michoacán, and Oaxaca. They didn’t examine three beaches in in Tonalá, Chiapas, due to technical difficulties in accessing the sample sites.

It is important to note that during the holiday season, visitors can find beach committees on all beaches. Present also are staff of the state committees wearing official badges, shirts, vests, and hats. In case you have any observations, you can approach them.
