Puerto Vallarta leads recovery of beach destinations
Occupancy and reservation figures confirm that Jalisco's main beach destination remains one of the most popular
The country’s beach destinations are leading the tourist recovery in Mexico. Among them, Puerto Vallarta leads the way in hotel occupancy figures based on reports from SECTUR’s Datatur system. This results from considering the fixed cap of 66 percent per the Health Board. The reservation trend for the next few days remains positive with the influx of visitors from Aguascalientes after its holiday fair period, and the reactivation of events in the destination, particularly sports in the month of May.
Due to the Easter holidays, hotel occupancy in Puerto Vallarta increased to 47.9 percent in the month of March. The general occupancy in the country reached an average of 37 percent).
STR – a company specialist in data measurement for tourism and real estate- ranked Puerto Vallarta as the destination with the best tourist performance in Mexico during the month of March. The company bases this rank on a series of metrics showing the occupancy percentage, which in turn are referred to the parameters and guidelines established by the authorities.
Protocols have served their purpose
Authorities implemented biosafety protocols to promote responsible tourism recovery, which have bolstered travelers’ confidence in Puerto Vallarta. The above has allowed the state to pass a green traffic light of epidemic risk. According to Luis Villaseñor, acting director of the Puerto Vallarta Tourism Promotion and Advertising Trust, capacity limits and strict preventive protocols are observed on beaches, hotels, restaurants, bars, activities, and tours.
Members of the State’s Health Board and the authorities of Jalisco designed a program focused on the commitment to the general care of the destination, which includes the community and visitors, seeking to preserve the health of everyone, so they established capacity limits and prevention measures in the accesses, Mr. Villaseñor specified.
Summer gets hotter
The summer vacation period looms on the horizon with an expected consolidation of tourism recovery progressing with strict observance of preventive protocols. For the time being, a recent survey shows that most hoteliers report a constant increase in reservations for the weeks from June to August, which are already above 33 percent. They are expecting a final result of close to the 66 percent set by state authorities.
It is noteworthy to highlight the consolidation in the number of flights arriving in Puerto Vallarta. 1,577 came in April, and from January to March there was a recovery of 81.7 percent of the number of domestic passengers to the destination, compared to the same period in 2020. National and international airlines report a significant increase in demand, particularly during weekends, “long weekends,” and holiday periods.
New international players such as Spirit Airlines and JetBlue will arrive in the region; the next route from Ciudad Juárez with VivaAerobus is the new national connection; the destination is regaining connectivity and expanding the number of flight options.
North Americans are seeking Puerto Vallarta as a beach destination
Also, Luis Villaseñor explained that the trend of better results in beach destinations than in cities will continue through 2021, as vaccination processes in the United States and Mexico advance, increasing travelers’ confidence in the upcoming seasons.
“We can see that more and more North Americans are taking advantage of opportunities to make short trips to the beach destinations of Mexico; in Puerto Vallarta, we are ready to receive visitors with all the required guarantees to ensure their health and unforgettable experiences in this wonderful beach destination.”
Furthermore, according to data by Google in the month of April, Puerto Vallarta is in the top ten of searches for international destinations for travelers from the United States, showing that Mexico is the most sought-after destination by Americans planning a trip abroad; this beach destination is included alongside cities such as London, Dubai, and Paris in the select list.
