Cancun, Blue Flag Leader with Sustainable Beaches and Boats
July 25, 2023
By celebrating the tenth anniversary of Playa Delfines as the first Blue Flag beach in the municipality and one of the first five in all of Mexico to receive this award, Cancun reaffirms its leadership in this certification both nationally and internationally.
“Today, with this international award that certifies excellence in water quality, environmental education, safety and services, and environmental management, we begin the 2023-2024 Blue Flag season,” said Mayor Ana Paty Peralta.
In front of the imposing and unique backdrop of the turquoise sea and white sand of Playa Delfines, she emphasized that this public beach is one of the most popular in Cancun, the state and the country among locals and visitors; one of the first five beaches in Mexico to receive the award in 2013 and one of those to receive the Blue Flag this time along with the public beaches: Del Niño, Perlas, Chac Mool, Marlín, Ballenas and Coral, for a total of seven. To these he added those corresponding to the hotels Fiesta Americana Condesa, Iberostar and Live Aqua, as well as the 33 boats of “Cancun Sailing”, which he recognized for their commitment of private initiative.
On behalf of the Foundation for Environmental Education Mexico (FFE), its executive director, Joaquin Diaz Rios, described Cancun as a world-class destination that must remain competitive, which is why the Blue Flag continues to attract tourists from all over the world, competing with the sandy beaches of Greece, the Dominican Republic and now the United States.
“Cancun is the national capital of the Blue Flag for the number of beaches and sustainable tourism boats, there is no other municipality in the country and in America that has so many flags; it is something we have to thank the people who work and get up from six in the morning to maintain its image,” he said.
