Cancun boat tours to Isla Mujeres to have prices regulated

The local government will regulate prices for the popular boat trips from Cancun to Isla Mujeres in an effort to safeguard both tourists and boat owners.

Currently, more than 1,500 small boats run this service, and more than 25,000 people travel on these breathtaking excursions every day.

The current fare ranges from $50 to $80 USD, with significant price differences between these small operators.

The fact that many of these boats are assigned passengers from independent tour operators, who handle the marketing and customer acquisition, and who then take a sizable cut from the boat operators, is a major source of concern for regulators.

Regularizing the pricing, in this case, the minimum compensation granted to the boat owners, leaves a lot more money available for maintenance, insurance, and staffing.
