The third meeting of the Mexican Caribbean Hotel Council with the governor of Quintana Roo, Mara Lezama, served to, among other things, request a study of the profitability and method of charging the international tourism tax, known as Visitax, for being invasive. This was confirmed by David Ortiz, vice-president of this organization, which represents the various associations of hotels and holiday clubs in Quintana Roo, totaling 125 thousand rooms.

This meeting was really positive, according to the hotel manager. Several topics were covered throughout the discussion, including mobility conflicts, sargassum recale, security, and so on.

The desire to evaluate the way the “Visitax” is charged, which was implemented by the state administration in 2020 and has been in effect since 2021, was a key point. “The issue is that it is charged in a misleading manner, which is concerning because it harms the destination’s image,” he explained.

In addition, Visitax advertising at Cancun International Airport includes the following warning: “Avoid inconveniences, remember that the charge is linked to your passport number.” This has sparked worry among tourists, who see it as a threat and believe they may face immigration issues as a result.
