Chichén Itzá to have a new museum

Chichén Itzá, the Maya complex that is now one of Mexico’s most popular tourist destinations, will get a new museum.

The new museum will replace an older one that closed more than a decade ago. While plans are still in the early stages, the museum will most likely display hundreds of archaeological finds from the surrounding area, attracting tourists to Chichén Itzá’s ruins following the controversial Maya Train’s completion.

Officials from Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) have revealed few details about the proposed facility thus far. Previously, however, the agency set aside $14 million for site improvements, including a new museum, a visitor center, and conservation work.

The INAH also recently announced that it would reopen a previously closed-to-tourists area of Chichén Itzá known as Chichén Viejo. Archaeologists discovered an ancient elite housing complex there earlier this year.
