Starting this week, the Secretariat of the Navy will begin with the installation of the anti-sargasso barrier in Playa del Carmen and once these works are completed, they will do the same in Tulum.

This was announced by Jose Angel Perez Perez, coordinator of attention to sargasso of the Secretariat of the Navy, who emphasized that, added to the barriers that already exist in Mahahual and Puerto Morelos, they will have a total of 8,550 linear meters of these protection systems against sargasso.

The military assured that with these four points, there is no need for more barriers, or even to extend them, since there are studies of currents that support that they are needed only in these strategic locations.

In an interview, the Navy officer affirmed that the number of sargassums has gone from “low to moderate” in recent weeks and that it is not a worrying problem, since of all the algae floating in the Caribbean Sea, less than 1% lands on the coasts of Quintana Roo.
