At the Cancun Airport, Kyle Busch, a well-known American NASCAR champion race car driver, was discovered in possession of a.38 caliber revolver and hollow point ammo. He was taken into custody after the discovery.

According to a statement made public by Kyle Busch, Mr. Busch was detained in Cancun, Mexico, and then returned to North Carolina. In the statement, Mr. Busch claims he had forgotten the gun was in his backpack and never intended to enter Mexico with it. Mr. Busch says he and his family consider the matter closed, implying he will not be serving any jail time.

Busch was reportedly planning to fly back to the United States on January 27 at a private terminal, or FBO terminal, at Cancun Airport.

Private security personnel got suspicious of Kyle Busch while he was at the airport and informed the National Guard that he might be carrying a gun. An unauthorized firearm and a magazine filled with hollow tip bullets, which are intended to do greater harm, were discovered after a search. When the rifle and ammunition were found, the National Guard detained Busch.

Busch was sentenced this month to 3 1/2 years in prison and ordered to pay a $1,000 fine for having a gun and ammunition, a punishment handed down by a judge in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, home to beach destinations Cancun and Tulum.

The federal Attorney General’s Office said the judge decided to allow a conditional punishment and let Busch leave Mexico after he paid a bond. The office did not say how much he paid.
