On the island of Cozumel, more than 500 baby sea turtles have already hatched this season. The Punta Sur Turtle Camp’s beaches are where the first 570 baby sea turtles were discovered, according to the Fundación de Parques y Museos de Cozumel (FPMC).

Ricardo Peralta Muñoz, technical manager of the Punta Sur Tortuguero Camp, reported that 570 hatchlings emerged from the first seven nests this week.

He stated that “as soon as they were born, they returned to the sea where they will begin their life cycle.”

He claimed that the commitment of volunteers to the FPMC’s sea turtle protection program is very taxing because they are required to patrol the camp’s beaches every day at night, sometimes well into the early hours of the morning when the turtles come to lay their eggs.

292 sea turtles have laid eggs there so far. According to the FPMC, there are 192 white and green turtle nests and 100 loggerhead turtle nests.

In order to find turtle nests and mark them appropriately to protect them, night tours have been intensified. He says that 292 nests have been recorded so far this season, which he views as a sign that it will be a successful season.
