Playa Del Carmen addressing street vendor issue

By Tribune Travel

October 19, 2023

Playa del Carmen is taking measures to ensure that street vendors comply with regulations, in order to enhance the experience of tourists. The vendors on this popular street are required to possess permits, however, not all of them adhere to this requirement. As a result, officials are able to regulate the number of vendors that set up shop, in order to prevent overcrowding on this bustling avenue.

Earlier this year, officials announced their intention to clamp down on illegal vendors on Playa del Carmen’s 5th Avenue. This was in response to complaints from shop owners who reported a loss of business due to the presence of these vendors. Consequently, the officials began relocating them to side streets.

Currently, as the famous strip becomes overcrowded with vendors once again, officials are conducting checks to ensure that vendors possess permits, and are weeding out those who do not comply with regulations. This is aimed at improving the experience of tourists who frequent this popular area.

By limiting the number of vendors and regulating their placement, officials are able to reduce the chaos and make walking down 5th Avenue a more enjoyable experience.
