Opening of estuary mouth reduces 80% of the estuary’s lily

The occurrence of Hurricane Norma has resulted in a significant alteration in the dynamics of the San Jose del Cabo estuary. The opening of the estuary mouth, which serves as the demarcation between the estuary and the ocean, has yielded a favorable outcome by eliminating approximately 80% of the water lily that previously encroached upon the Estero San José del Cabo State Ecological Reserve.

Throughout the previous weekend, diligent monitoring of the estuary’s opening was conducted by the reserve’s park rangers. The combination of forceful winds, water, and waves generated by the tropical storm facilitated the ingress of this invasive plant into the sea.

Although traces of the water lily can still be found along the beaches of San José del Cabo’s tourist corridor, its existence is limited due to its inability to survive in saltwater. Consequently, it is anticipated that the quantity of water lily present in the sea will diminish in the forthcoming days.
