Sport fishing, Los Cabos’ financial engine, under threat

About 30% of the state’s tourism is driven by sport fishing, which in turn encourages job growth and the expansion of the hotel sector.

Raul de Jesus Elenes Angulo, a federal senator, recently introduced an initiative that calls for the release of tarpon and roosterfish in addition to the dorado fish. Local residents are concerned about this proposal, especially sport fishermen and those who coordinate competitions, such Clicerio Mercado, the coordinator of Bisbee’s events in Mexico.

Mercado has made note of the possibility that this plan would permit fishing for these species near to the beach, which might be harmful to the ecology and the local economy. The fishing business and the long-term viability of these species are under grave danger, according to the fishing community.
