According to Rodrigo Esponda, director of the Los Cabos Tourism Trust, 29 000 people attended the Mexican Tennis Open last year, of whom 17,000 traveled to the area specifically for the sporting event.
It is an event that has had very good acceptance and growth in terms of the number of visitors who come exclusively to the destination to be in the week of the ATP.
The Mexican Tennis Open attracted 17,000 domestic and international visitors to Los Cabos last year, generating more than 100 million pesos in economic revenue. The total number of attendees was 29 thousand, and 17,000 of them were tourists, making up a sizable portion of those who came to Los Cabos specifically to attend the event, according to Esponda.
According to him, the local economy is primarily impacted by the hotel, restaurant, and transportation industries. Visitors spend an average of five nights there, numbers that have remained constant since 2018, though it cannot be ruled out that the number is higher due to the players’ popularity in this seventh edition.
Additionally, he stated that they expect to attract 19 to 20 thousand tourists this year, surpass the total number of attendees, and generate about 120 million pesos in economic revenue.
He mentioned that sports-related events are among the other significant occasions that contribute to the local economy. According to him, visitors who come to Los Cabos for sporting events spend 30% more money than the typical traveler.
Finally, Esponda revealed that the sporting and cultural events that have the biggest economic impacts on the destination are the Mexican Tennis Open, Ironman, Bisbee’s, and the Los Cabos Film Festival.
