Black Sunday” in Puerto Vallarta: Stores Set Ablaze After Road Blockades with Stolen Vehicles
February 22, 2026

Puerto Vallarta experienced a night of escalating violence following a series of road blockades carried out with stolen vehicles across different parts of the municipality. What residents have described as a “Black Sunday” has already been classified as a code red situation in the state of Jalisco.
After the initial blockades, unrest continued into the night with arson attacks and vandalism targeting local businesses. Preliminary reports indicate that at least two convenience stores were set on fire, with the first incidents reported in the Las Mojoneras district. Large flames and thick columns of smoke alarmed nearby residents as emergency crews worked to contain the fires amid tense and uncertain conditions.
In addition to the fires, multiple reports of looting began circulating. Witnesses stated that individuals took advantage of the chaos to break into affected establishments and steal merchandise.
According to accounts from the scene, Municipal Police units responded to several locations. However, as of this writing, no arrests have been officially confirmed. Residents reported that while officers temporarily dispersed those involved in the looting, some individuals returned after police units withdrew to continue stealing.
The situation has left the community on high alert. State and federal authorities have increased their presence in the area as efforts continue to restore order. Officials are urging residents to remain indoors and avoid traveling through affected zones until security conditions are fully stabilized.
