After ongoing concerns about poor lighting along Puerto Vallarta’s iconic Malecón, city authorities are taking action. A new public lighting project has officially entered the bidding phase, marking the first step in a significant upgrade to the popular boardwalk.
Juan Pablo Martínez, the City Manager, announced that in addition to ongoing cleaning campaigns and the restoration of building facades, improving illumination is now a top priority for enhancing the city center. The upgrades are scheduled for completion by the end of March, just in time for the first vacation season of the year.
But the improvements don’t stop at lighting. In the coming weeks, crews will also replace fractured paving stones along the Malecón, many of which have suffered damage from weather and heavy foot traffic. Some of these stones, which serve as seating areas for pedestrians, have already been removed, impacting the visitor experience.
To ensure the Malecón remains in prime condition for Semana Santa and Easter visitors, city officials are committing to a comprehensive renovation of Puerto Vallarta’s most beloved waterfront promenade.
Looking further ahead, an ambitious expansion project is also in the works. Plans call for extending the Malecón beyond its current 1.5-kilometer length, stretching from the Fishermen’s Cooperative near Hotel Rosita all the way to a new pier, which the state government intends to build along the coastline near Chile Street.
With these efforts, both locals and tourists can expect a safer, more inviting, and better-lit experience along one of Puerto Vallarta’s most treasured attractions.
