Fire in the Vallarta Sky Blazing Meteor Streaks Over Jalisco

By Tribune Travel

April 12, 2025

Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco – A fiery celestial spectacle stunned residents of Puerto Vallarta on the night of April 12, 2025, when a glowing red meteor lit up the night sky, leaving a trail of light across the heavens.

Witnesses across the region, including this reporter, described the object as a blazing rock hurtling from west to east at incredible speed, seemingly heading toward the Sierra Occidental. The phenomenon caused both awe and alarm among those who caught a glimpse of the fleeting fireball.

While driving north along Avenida México, I personally witnessed the meteor blaze overhead—its incandescent glow piercing the darkness in just a matter of seconds. Although the moment was too brief for professional equipment to be set up, a low-quality image was captured showing the object descending rapidly. Fortunately, our colleague Efrén Martínez Urrutia managed to record video footage of the incredible moment.

As of now, no official statements have confirmed or denied the meteor’s landing or impact site, but the scientific community offers well-documented explanations for such events.

Meteors, also known as “shooting stars” or bolides, are fragments of asteroids or comets that ignite due to atmospheric friction when entering Earth’s atmosphere. If large and resilient enough, these space rocks can survive their fiery descent and strike the Earth’s surface.

It’s estimated that Earth experiences around 6,100 meteor strikes annually that are significant enough to reach the ground. In Mexico alone, experts estimate approximately 17,000 meteor events per year, though most go unnoticed or fall in unpopulated areas.

This latest sighting in Puerto Vallarta is a stunning reminder of the dynamic relationship between Earth and the cosmos. Though the risk of damage is low, moments like these ignite public curiosity and emphasize the importance of ongoing scientific observation of space phenomena.

Reports of the meteor sighting have come in from multiple areas across the state of Jalisco, including Tomatlán, Guadalajara, Tlajomulco, and of course, Puerto Vallarta—where those lucky enough to look up at the right time will likely never forget the surreal image of fire streaking across the sky.

Stay tuned as we follow up on this celestial surprise.
