Maritime transport proposed for Puerto Vallarta and Banderas Bay

By Tribune Travel

March 27, 2025

For those of us who cherish the tranquility and beauty of Puerto Vallarta and Banderas Bay, the increasing traffic congestion can be a source of frustration. However, a potential solution is on the horizon: the revitalization of maritime transport. Jesús Carmona Jiménez, president of the Banderas Bay Hotels and Motels Association, suggests that this time-honored mode of travel could once again offer a smooth and scenic alternative to the often-gridlocked roadways.

Current Challenges to Transportation in Puerto Vallarta

The ongoing construction of the Las Juntas junction and the Bucerías-Puerto Vallarta International Airport section of the new highway, while promising long-term benefits, is currently impacting travel times. Tourists from the Riviera Nayarit are finding their journeys to the Puerto Vallarta airport extended, which can add stress to any vacation.

A Historical Perspective on Transportation in Puerto Vallarta

As many may recall, maritime transport proved invaluable when the Ameca River bridge collapsed in 2010. During that time, ferries and water taxis efficiently moved hotel guests and staff, demonstrating the viability of this option. Now, with modern infrastructure and planning, this solution could be even more effective.

A Vision for Improved Transportation in Puerto Vallarta

Discussions are underway with the municipal governments of Puerto Vallarta and Banderas Bay to establish and enhance nautical routes. These routes would not only alleviate traffic but also offer travelers a unique perspective on the stunning coastline. Imagine arriving at your destination by sea, enjoying the gentle ocean breeze and panoramic views.

Travel Advice for the Present

In the meantime, travelers are advised to allow ample time for land travel, particularly during peak hours. Carmona Jiménez recommends planning for at least two extra hours of transit time, a small adjustment for the reward of experiencing one of Mexico’s most beautiful destinations.

This proposal for enhanced maritime transport reflects a commitment to preserving the charm and accessibility of Puerto Vallarta and Banderas Bay. By embracing innovative solutions, we can ensure that our time in paradise remains as relaxing and enjoyable as ever.
