November 09, 2024
♥The second day of Puerto Vallarta by UTMB was filled with intense competition and a palpable sense of perseverance as athletes pushed through the grueling challenges of the Wixárika 100M and Hikuri 100K races. From the early hours of Friday, November 8, an indomitable spirit of determination captivated participants, creating unforgettable moments for both competitors and spectators alike.
In the Hikuri 100K race, Colombian runner Julían Vinasco delivered a stunning performance, claiming the lead early on and maintaining his dominance until he crossed the finish line as the champion. Vinasco’s strategic approach and unwavering endurance secured his well-deserved victory. Behind him, Mexican athlete Júpiter Carera and Irish runner Paddy O’Leary finished in second and third place, respectively, rounding out the men’s podium. In the women’s division, Canadian Arden Young made a powerful statement, finishing eighth overall and seizing first place among female competitors. Fellow Canadian Amber Houle and American Alexa Romano followed closely, earning second and third places.
Meanwhile, the Wixárika 100M race highlighted the strength of Latin American athletes. Peruvian runner Remigio Huaman shone brightly, dominating the race from start to finish with remarkable skill and endurance. Huaman’s victory was an inspiring display of athleticism, with American runners Samuel Collins and Steven Doll finishing in second and third places, respectively.
As night descended on Puerto Vallarta, runners continued to battle the demanding terrain, while spectators cheered on the courageous athletes, keeping the energy alive throughout the vibrant evening.
During an awards ceremony at Los Arcos del Malecón, Alejandro Ochoa, the event director, presented a heartfelt moment of generosity. Ochoa handed over a check for $670,000 MXN to three local associations—Ángeles en Libertad, Pasitos de Luz, and CEMBAB. This substantial donation, raised through contributions from participating runners, underscored the event’s commitment to supporting the Vallarta community.
Puerto Vallarta by UTMB continues to stand out as one of the world’s most spectacular and challenging trail running events. The second day proved no exception, highlighting the athletes’ relentless spirit and passion for the sport.
The competition heats up again on Saturday, November 9, with more races and an awards ceremony at 6:30 PM, where the day’s top performers will be celebrated.
