So You Think You Can RISE 2025: A Night of Talent, Passion, and Community

Puerto Vallarta witnessed a night of electrifying performances, heartfelt moments, and unwavering community spirit as So You Think You Can RISE 2025 took center stage. With 650 attendees filling the venue with anticipation and enthusiasm, the event celebrated the talent and dedication of Vallarta’s rising stars while raising crucial funds for Refugio Infantil Santa Esperanza (RISE).

A Grand Opening

Hosts Nacho Granados (Coco Cabaret/ Catrina Cantina)  and Jessy Ruiz (CPS News/ Asphalt Radio)  kicked off the night with energy and charisma, greeting the audience with warm enthusiasm. “Welcome to So You Think You Can RISE 2025! We are so happy you can be with us tonight as we find out who will be Vallarta’s next rising stars!” Jessy, glowing under the stage lights, gave a special shoutout to Alex Daou from Alexander Salon Plaza Marina, the stylist behind her stunning look, before sharing insights about her work in radio and television, including her role in Asphalt Radio, Vallarta’s all-English local radio show. Nacho, no stranger to the spotlight, mentioned his current show in the burlesque scene, as well as his excitement to be part of the latin dance scene setting the stage for a night of show-stopping performances.

Meet the Contestants and Coaches

The competition showcased nine outstanding contestants, each guided by their dedicated coaches. From vocalists to variety acts, these talented individuals took the stage one by one, eager to impress both the judges and the audience. As the upbeat notes of On Top of the World played, the contestants and their coaches proudly walked onto the stage, waving to the enthusiastic crowd. The lineup included:

  • Jason Mathis, coached by Kevin Anthony (sponsored by Casa Karma)
  • Gibran Torres Alvarez, coached by Derek Carkner (sponsored by El Granero)
  • Danza Infantil Del Cerro, coached by Angeles Salcedo (sponsored by Mundo de Azulejos and Mundo Cristal)
  • Mitch Kushner, coached by Luis Villanueva (sponsored by Los Muertos Brewing)
  • F91, coached by Kimberly LaRue (sponsored by Thrive Med Spa)
  • Warren Wessley Weir, coached by Roy Gomez (sponsored by Fredy’s Tucán)
  • Natalia Juliet, coached by Steven Retchless (sponsored by Azafrán, Olas Altas Suites, and Sapphire Ocean Club)
  • Nicolas Lara, coached by Dabit and Ale of Tromba Vetusta (sponsored by Greengo4Gringo)
  • Vizente Canas, coached by Maru Prado Conti (sponsored by Americana Sports Bar)

A heartfelt round of applause filled the venue as gratitude was extended to the generous sponsors who made the event possible.

Judges and Their Expertise

Taking their places at the judges’ table were three esteemed figures from the performing arts scene:

  • Eva Jiménez, a multidisciplinary artist and producer, known for her acclaimed Pink tribute show at Coco Cabaret.
  • Al Carswell, an actor, singer, and producer recognized for his role as Sam in Mamma Mia! and his contributions to Vallarta’s nightlife through Las Terrazas, home to Tunnel Bar, The Social Club, and Brick Oven.
  • Chris Lopez, a visionary director and producer behind tribute shows to Freddie Mercury, Beyoncé, Sam Smith, and Madonna at The Palm and Coco Cabaret.

After introductions, the judges took their seats, ready to evaluate each performance with a keen eye for talent and potential.

The Competition Begins

With excitement in the air, the performances kicked off. Contestant after contestant took the stage, each bringing their unique artistry and passion:

  • Jason Mathis captivated with his rendition of All of Me.
  • Gibran Torres Alvarez delivered a moving piano performance of My Way.
  • Danza Infantil Del Cerro energized the crowd with a dynamic dance routine accompanied by live drumming.
  • Mitch Kushner stunned with his powerful version of Circle of Life.
  • F91 electrified with a mesmerizing dance performance featuring a live singer.
  • Warren Wessley Weir brought emotion with You Are Loved (Don’t Give Up).
  • Natalia Juliet, a bright aspiring NASA scientist, captivated the audience with a mesmerizing piano performance in a stunning light purple gown.
  • Nicolas Lara, light up the stage with his smile and his accordion playing “La llorona” 
  • Vizente Canas added their own unique flair to the competition, making it a night to remember.

Intermission Surprise: A Heartwarming Moment

After the intermission, the audience was treated to a delightful surprise. Nacho Granados took the stage and, in an unforgettable moment, all the children from RISE (Refugio Infantil Santa Esperanza) joined him, dressed as minions, and danced joyfully while he sang Happy. It was a fun and heartwarming performance that brought smiles to everyone in the audience.

 

Following this touching performance, Jessy Ruiz took the stage once more to introduce two incredible women: Lisa Manoogian and Claudia Viscarra.

Tonight, we not only celebrate talent but also the heart and dedication of two extraordinary women. Lisa Manoogian and Claudia Viscarra work tirelessly for this beautiful cause for the children at RISE. Their love, effort, and commitment make a real difference in the lives of so many children. Let’s give them a big round of applause for all that they do!

Lisa and Claudia spoke about the ongoing needs of the refuge, emphasizing that while the generosity of the audience was greatly appreciated, it was never enough. With so many little ones to care for, continued support was always necessary. Many attendees contributed to the cause that night, demonstrating the strong community spirit that defines Puerto Vallarta.

The Road to Victory

The competition was fierce, and the judges faced the difficult task of selecting one vocalist and one variety act to advance for a final showdown. The audience, having cheered on their favorites throughout the night, played a crucial role in determining who would ultimately claim the title of So You Think You Can RISE 2025 winner.

And the Winners Are…

After an exhilarating night of performances, F91—a group of six talented young dancers—was crowned the winner in the variety category. Their captivating modern dance routine not only showcased their skill and artistry but also delivered a powerful message about the importance of protecting our planet.

 

 

Vicente Canas  took the top spot in the vocalist category. Their incredible talent and dedication earned them the prestigious title, along with fantastic prizes, including a $20,000 peso cash prize for first place, a professional photo session, a custom performance outfit, vocal and dance coaching sessions, and a featured performance in an upcoming Vallarta show. A Celebration of Talent and Community

Beyond the competition, the event was a testament to the thriving artistic community in Puerto Vallarta. From the talented contestants to the dedicated coaches and esteemed judges, everyone came together to support and celebrate the arts. The audience’s energy was electric, proving once again that Vallarta is a city that nurtures and uplifts its creative talents.

As the night drew to a close, one thing was certain—So You Think You Can RISE 2025 was more than just a competition; it was a celebration of passion, perseverance, and the transformative power of the performing arts. Beyond the incredible talent on stage, the event served a greater purpose: raising funds for the 40 children living at RISE, including nine babies under 19 months.
