Special Report: Dengue Remains a Threat During Winter
January 23, 2025
In Puerto Vallarta, dengue continues to be a public health concern even during the winter season. While it has traditionally been associated with warm, rainy weather, the Aedes aegypti mosquito, the primary carrier of dengue, has shown the ability to adapt to colder temperatures.
In 2024, Jalisco experienced a staggering 2,089% increase in confirmed dengue cases, rising from 955 in 2023 to 20,907 cases. Puerto Vallarta faced a particularly critical situation with 827 cases and three fatalities, as reported by the Eighth Sanitary Jurisdiction, led by Dr. Jaime Álvarez Zayas.
Nationwide, Mexico recorded over 110,000 cases and 262 deaths, with Jalisco and Nuevo León being among the hardest-hit states. Experts attribute this surge partly to climate change, which has allowed the mosquito to spread to new regions.
Health officials urge the public to maintain preventive measures year-round: eliminate mosquito breeding sites, clean water containers, use repellents, and ensure good household hygiene. Remember: Dengue doesn’t take a break, and prevention is our strongest defense.
