Stephanie Montero, ready to Swim for the Whales

By Tribune Travel

November 15, 2023

The region of Puerto Vallarta and Banderas Bay is the natural setting for the great feat “Swim for the Whales” this November 18th, which invites us to become aware and sensitized about the importance of protecting and conserving the humpback whale and its environment.

Three days before the open water swim, Stephanie Montero Bending and her team of specialists are in direct communication with the captains of the boats that will accompany the swimmer during a 12-hour crossing of 35 km from Islas Marietas, Bahía de Banderas, Nayarit, to Las Gemelas beach, Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco.

This Saturday, November 18th, is the awaited date of the Swim for the Whales – Banderas Bay Crossing, after almost 6 months since Stephanie began her training in the open sea, in the swimming pool and in the Natural Park Las Estacas.

The 35 km swim that Stephanie Montero is about to do to cross Banderas Bay is considered an ultra-marathon in open water, considering that only swimming 10 km in the sea is the equivalent of a marathon on land. 35 km is the distance between the English Channel and France.
