Tropical Storm Forming in the Pacific: Vallarta Port Closed; Alert in Baja California Sur
September 12, 2024
The port of Puerto Vallarta has been closed to navigation as of the first minute of September 12, according to the Port Captaincy. The decision is due to adverse weather conditions caused by the interaction of tropical wave number 21 and a low-pressure system in the Pacific Ocean.
The weather system has generated winds of 15 to 20 knots, with gusts up to 30 knots, and waves between 7 and 10 feet. These conditions pose a danger to the navigation of smaller vessels, which is why port activities have been suspended until further notice.
Frigate Captain and Regional Port Captain of Puerto Vallarta, Andrés Aguirre Hernández, issued the official statement. It was addressed to the maritime and port community, as well as the fishing sector of the region, informing them that the port will remain closed until conditions are once again safe.
The weather phenomenon, which does not yet have an official name, is currently off the coast of Jalisco, between the municipalities of Cihuatlán and Tomatlán. It is expected that this system, which could develop into a tropical storm in the coming hours, will be located off the coast of Puerto Vallarta by Thursday afternoon.
The forecast indicates that the tropical storm could then head toward Cabo San Lucas by Friday, without posing significant risks to the mainland region.
However, cloudy skies and intermittent rain are expected, which will keep tourist activities related to navigation suspended.
According to meteorologists, the tropical storm is expected to continue its path toward Cabo San Lucas, where it could arrive on Friday afternoon, moving inland on the peninsula toward the municipality of La Paz before returning to the sea toward the Gulf of California, possibly heading toward Huatabampo.
The port of Puerto Vallarta will remain closed until authorities determine that weather conditions are safe enough for reopening.
Port authorities recommend staying informed through official channels for updates on the port’s situation and the weather conditions in the region.
