Closed season for sharks and rays is on
May 16, 2023
The closed season for several marine species began on the first of May, starting with sharks and manta rays, followed by stone oysters on the first of June, lobsters in July and shrimp in the Pacific on the first of September.
This was announced by Pedro Barraza, representative of the oyster farmers of Bucerías, who pointed out that fortunately they still have 15 days left to harvest oysters in their authorised areas, such as El Punto beach in Bucerías and El Tizate, on the border with La Cruz de Huanacaxtle.
The representative of the oyster farmers explained that the closures are important because they allow the species to spawn or reproduce, and that is why the rock oyster is given three months, because if it is not left in these three months, the oyster will not finish spawning and will gradually become extinct.
During the months of the ban, the oysters lay their roe and the reproductive cycle takes place, and during these months, the oyster farmers themselves ensure that the product is not plundered by poachers who carry out illegal activities and plunder the banks when they should be respecting the ban.
