The Head of Pediatrics at Hospiten Cabo San Lucas, Laura Castañeda, delivered an informative talk to parents this Tuesday on the prevention of respiratory diseases in children.

Respiratory illnesses are caused by micro-organisms or toxic substances present in the environment or in droplets of saliva or nasal secretion, which a sick person releases when coughing, talking, or sneezing.

After returning to daily activities outside the home where children were protected, respiratory diseases such as influenza, rhinitis, sinusitis, pulmonary fibrosis, laryngitis, asthma, pharyngitis, pneumonia, tonsillitis, tracheitis, bronchitis, otitis, among others, are common.

For Dr. Laura Castañeda, it is vital not to overlook any symptoms and she urges the public to stop self-medicating.

Don’t let a cold go unattended because it can complicate things, as I explained earlier, like bronchopneumonia, pneumonia, and otitis, don’t self-medicate and always go to the doctor immediately and if you see that your child is not getting better, you have to go back to the doctor to find out what is happening to them so that it is not too late when you get to the hospital.

Some of the most common warning signs to look out for are rapid breathing and heartbeat, difficulty breathing, pus or secretions, difficulty drinking, low spirits, and prolonged or difficult-to-control fever.

According to the head of pediatrics at Hospiten Los Cabos, respiratory illnesses are more common during the autumn and winter season, which is why it is so important that children are vaccinated in accordance with the national vaccination booklet.

The workshops given by the Hospiten specialists focus on prevention, reinforcing the good habit of medical check-ups, and having the basic concepts for any type of emergency that may occur in the home.

This talk is offered once a month, we often talk about breastfeeding, but this time I wanted to talk about something for older patients as we are in the winter season and the most common reason for consultations at the moment is acute respiratory infections.
