Once a sleep disorder has been identified, it may usually be treated specifically and successfully. While certain ailments require medical attention while others call for surgery, the majority of issues can be resolved by implementing changes to daily routines and behaviors.

Insomnia

The causes of insomnia are widely diverse. Some of them are caused by psychological conditions (depression, temporary stress), environmental factors, or other disorders like those accompanied by chronic pain, etc. But the usage of hypnotics is one of the major contributing factors.

People who experience insomnia are fatigued all day, have an irritated personality, and perform worse during the day.

Sleep Apnea Syndrome (SAS)

SAS is characterized by the development of irregular breathing pauses during sleeping, as evidenced by loud snoring, recurrent apneas, lack of deep sleep, excessive daytime sleepiness, headaches, mental disorders, erectile disfunction, etc. It frequently relates to cardiovascular issues.

Periodic Leg Movements

It is characterized by difficulties falling asleep, a sense of restless sleep, tiredness during the day, and jerky leg movements when sleeping. The so-called “restless legs syndrome” also causes the patient’s lower extremities to itch and make continual movements, especially while they are resting.

Hypoventilation Syndrome

It has relation to the difficulty the lungs have keeping up a proper exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide. Obesity, various neuromuscular disorders, or changes to the thoracic cage are its main causes.

Parasomnias

Parasomnias are abnormal events that may occur during sleep. The most frequent are talking while asleep, episodes of confusion upon awakening, nightmares, night terrors, enuresis, sleepwalking, somniloquy and bruxism.

Narcolepsy

Even after a restful night’s sleep, excessive daytime sleepiness is the disease’s main symptom. It is an uncontrollable, ongoing tiredness. The most frequent times are typically just after meals, but it can also happen when you are driving or just having a discussion.

The quality of life of those who have these conditions decreases, and occasionally they are the root cause or precursor to other diseases including depression, hypertension, heart attacks, etc. If you suffer from any of these disorders, see Hospiten’s neurophysiologist.
