The hiker’s backpack

When we choose a path, we also choose a challenge, an effort and a risk. All trails have risks and dangers, especially if you have a medical condition or injury. Therefore, we must also choose with the greatest precision what to carry in our backpack because our life could depend on its content.
No. I’m not exaggerating. If you can call it a trail, it means that it goes away from the towns and that our phone signal could be null, that the emergency services could have difficulties arriving or that you could get lost. And they are called accidents precisely because they are unforeseen. So, let’s see what can be useful to us in an emergency.
Water and food
Always, the most important thing is the amount of water. Consider drinking water every thirty minutes at least. So, if your walk is 3 hours round trip, you should drink at least 250 milliliters every half hour. This is, in this case, a liter and a half of water.
The second is the replenishment of energy. The food. You should eat a small snack along with your water every hour, in such a way that it allows better digestion and hydrates your throat. The amount can be the equivalent of a chocolate and cereal bar, an apple, or a banana.
What else to carry in you backpack?
On the trail there may be falls, scrapes, cuts or insect bites. So, you cannot miss a small first-aid kit. To assemble your first-aid kit you must consider your medical history, therefore, you should consult your doctor about its contents. If you don’t have health problems, you can check online how to put it together or you can buy it at a pharmacy.
In this list we can add: a whistle, a raincoat, toilet paper, paracord, a knife, a flashlight, a lighter, insect repellent, a thermal blanket, monocular and a compass at least. Do not forget to bring your fully charged cell phone, download maps and/or route applications, and if possible, a portable energy recharge.
If we are always prepared to withstand the elements for more than one night, then we can walk unworried and enjoy our path.
As much as possible, do not walk alone on the trails. It is better if you walk with at least two other people. Let’s call it the Rule of Three. If one suffers a mishap, one more stays with him and the other goes for help. This can result in benefits of time and companionship for the affected party.
These recommendations are nothing more than a guide, so that you yourself can investigate thoroughly about the safety of the hiker. Don’t forget to always check with your doctor, talk with your walking companions, and leave details of your travel plan (path, route time, and return time) at home. Safety first. Enjoy the trail!
