Puerto Vallarta, the enchanting beach destination on Mexico’s Pacific coast, has reached an exceptional achievement in its commitment to preserving its natural environment and the quality of its beaches by receiving three Blue Flag awards for the 2023-2024 season.

This fact represents an important step in the recovery of Puerto Vallarta’s status as a Blue Flag beach destination. Four of its beaches already held this distinction and have attempted to renew their certifications without success; however, only three beaches have met all the rigorous requirements necessary to obtain this coveted recognition.

During a meeting of the Mexican National Blue Flag Jury for the 2023-2024 season, a thorough analysis was made of the candidacies of a total of 64 beaches, 2 marinas and 31 sustainable tourism vessels throughout the country. In addition to the renewal applications, 11 new nominations were received from 9 beaches and 2 sustainable tourism boats.

In the specific case of Puerto Vallarta, its commitment to maintaining the quality of its beaches is undeniable. Last year, the city managed to regain two Blue Flag award. This year, it has submitted the candidacies to renew the certifications of Camarones, Palmares, Playa de Oro and Sheraton beaches. Only Sheraton Beach has successfully passed the rigorous evaluation process and received the corresponding approval.

In addition, two new candidacies were presented for the beaches of two prestigious hotels, Marriott and Westin, both located in Marina Vallarta. Both beaches met the strict requirements established by Blue Flag, and as of July 1, they are officially recognized as Blue Flag beaches.

This brings the total number of certified beaches in Puerto Vallarta this year to three, a recognition that underscores the city’s strong commitment to quality and sustainability at its beaches. Joaquín Díaz Ríos, Executive Director of the Foundation for Environmental Education Mexico (FEE), confirmed this milestone. He also highlighted the positive impact it will have on attracting responsible tourists and nature lovers to Puerto Vallarta.
