The Puerto Vallarta Malecon, known for its stunning coastline and lively atmosphere, is home to a number of iconic sculptures that enhance the area. The “Triton and Mermaid” sculpture stands out among them; it is a classically inspired piece of art that has mesmerized visitors for years. We will examine the background and history of this sculpture, as well as the life and career of its talented Mexican artist Carlos Espino.
“Triton and Mermaid” is a bronze sculpture created by Carlos Espino in 1987. The artist, born on May 3, 1953, comes from a family of Italian painters and sculptors and from an early age showed his passion for the arts. With a total dedication to sculpture, Carlos Espino became an outstanding exponent of his field in Mexico.
Reviving the spirit of antiquity in contemporary sculpture
“Triton and Mermaid” is just one example of Espino’s artwork drawing inspiration from classical mythology. One of the Greek sea gods, Triton, is shown in the sculpture approaching a mermaid, a mythical creature who attracted sailors with her music and seductive voice. This sculpture is a striking homage to Greco-Roman culture thanks to its meticulous attention to detail and adherence to classical traditions.
However, the local authorities decided to rename the sculpture “Neptune and the Nereid” rather than “Triton and Siren” despite authorship and intellectual property rights. The original name more accurately captured the artist’s intent and essence, so this choice has caused some debate. Since Carlos Espino was an avid student of Greco-Roman mythology, he took care to avoid incorporating elements from other cultures into his works.

The sculpture’s location has changed over the years as well. It was initially situated where the sculpture “The Subtle Stone Eater” had once stood in front of the Mandala night club. It was later relocated to the Malecon, where it is now situated at the intersection of Morelos and Mina Streets, roughly where it was first established in 1990.
The monumental sculpture “Triton and Mermaid” is just one of Carlos Espino’s many works produced over the course of his career. Each of his sculptures, which have left their mark on significant avenues and plazas throughout Mexico, reflects his classical and academic style.
