November 25, 2022

The Festival of Our Lady of Guadalupe is one of the greatest Puerto Vallarta yearly festivals. The holiday season in Mexico is filled with family gatherings and vibrant decorations. On the days preceding December 12, the nation-wide event honors the Virgin Mary and her significance to Mexican culture. One of the greatest sites to celebrate is in Puerto Vallarta, where the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the well-known cathedral near the Malecon boardwalk, shines brightly. These 12 days of an exciting festival and other events are not to be missed if you are traveling to Puerto Vallarta this winter.

The Festival of Our Lady of Guadalupe is held on December 12, the day on which Juan Deigo’s cloak, bearing the image of the Lady of Guadalupe, first appeared to the archbishop of Mexico City. This holiday, which starts on December 1 and lasts for several days, is spread out over several festivals and activities in Mexico. Many pilgrims travel to churches across the nation, and some even go to the Hill of Tepeyac to worship the Virgin Mary.

What happens during these days?

The Woolworth shop on Juarez Street is the starting point of one of the largest Puerto Vallarta events. It extends to the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Families, churches, schools, unions, companies, and neighborhood organizations make a processional down the cobblestone street during the Festival of Our Lady of Guadalupe. The marching of mariachi bands and traditional dancers turns this trip into a joyous cultural event. While fireworks explode above, vendors on the side of the road sell children’s toys and serve hot street food.

The processions come to a close at the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe on the final night, December 12, with a special liturgy celebrating the Virgin Mary. If you’re going to attend any of the festivals in Puerto Vallarta in 2022, this is the one that will give your heart happiness and hope since the faith and love of the Mexican people are contagious. Additionally, December 12 marks the city of Puerto Vallarta’s founding anniversary, making it a very lucky day to travel there.

Mexico is renowned for its exuberant celebrations of traditional festivals and festivities. The Virgin of Guadalupe is revered and held in high regard by many. All are welcome to attend the processionals, which are held over the first 12 nights of December and celebrate Mexico’s culture, hope, and joy, regardless of their level of religious affiliation.
