“Let’s have a mezcal!” Michelle Couttolenc, Carlos Cortés, and Jaime Baksht exclaimed when they heard the news. The five-person team of which they are part had just won the Oscar for Best Sound for, fittingly, Sound of Metal, continuing with the tradition of great Mexican sound engineers.

Sound of Metal beat Greyhound, Mank, News of the World, and Soul for what was previously two awards (Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Editing) combined into one overall award this year.

Couttolenc said “it is a great honor. I am very proud. I still can’t believe it. It is a teamwork, shared with my partners. This is amazing!”

It is the first time a Mexican (well, three, actually) wins this award. Five other nominations had been granted before to Mexican individuals, while Baksht has been awarded Goya and Ariel prizes as sound engineer in Mexican productions.

Best Sound wasn’t Sound of Metal‘s only prize. Editor Mikkel E. G. Nielsen also picked up the Best Film Editing award for his work on the film.

You can stream Sound of Metal at Amazon Prime Video.
