Cruise ships must anchor in the bay due to lack of docking facilities

Loreto and Zihuatanejo, along with Cabo San Lucas, are the only ports in the Pacific where arriving cruise ships must anchor, but this has a positive impact on the destination as they can anchor up to four ships, which is not possible in destinations such as Puerto Vallarta or Mazatlan, which only have capacity for three ships, giving Los Cabos a greater opportunity to have a greater tourist presence.

It is estimated that by the end of the year Cabo San Lucas will remain in second place in arrivals compared to Puerto Vallarta and Mazatlan, so Los Cabos will continue to be the spearhead destination, “it is a very interesting destination where there have been no incidents that could negatively affect the image of the destination, so far everything is going well”. The port, which is in the process of being built, is now managed by the Secretary of the Navy; all that is missing is the concession title and for them to register their tariffs and then they will be able to operate with their own budget to begin to see the future development of the Port of San Luis.

Despite the fact that Los Cabos is one of the destinations that leave a very good impression on the tourist, the lack of a dock is an inconvenience that brings setbacks, so many cruise passengers decide not to disembark since it means waiting in line, waiting to get on the boat, disembarking, then waiting in line again to get back on the boat and board the ship, this makes a percentage prefer to stay on board; a problem that is compensated by the anchorage capacity of the bay.

He explained that each ship has a group of tourists on board, for example, there are cruise ships that carry older adults, such as Holland American and Celebrity, where up to 35% do not disembark because they have mobility problems and it is difficult for them to get off the ship, but younger tourists traveling on cruise ships such as Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Princess, only 10 to 15% stay on board.
