Nora Relief Concert, a huge success

By Gary Beck

September 13, 2021

The Act2PV Emergency Relief Fund committee has chosen three families with children whose homes have been damaged or destroyed in the aftermath of Hurricane Nora, and 100% of the money collected at the Nora Relief Concert, as well as a portion of bar sales, will be given directly to these three families!

This was a fundraiser event and the concert features music by the Act2PV performers as well as some very special guest performers, all who have donated their time for this worthy cause!

The families that Act2PV has chosen to help are in desperate need of some high-ticket items right now, including washing machines, mattresses, kitchen items, clothing, school supplies etc. If you would like to donate any of these items, please contact Cate Elizabeth Valcic at act2pvnorarelief@gmail.com.  A big thank you to Home Improvement PV/Alfonso Aguilar in Puerto Vallarta for volunteering to help us get these larger items to the people that need them.

These entertainers have been performing here during the summer season and joined forces tonight on one stage to entertain the attendees of this fundraiser. A group danced away “Uptown Funk”, revving the crowd for what lay ahead. Kevin Anthony II was selected to be the evening’s host and immediately it became obvious that he has the ability and experience in talking to the audience and introducing act after act. He advised that in the upcoming season that he would return to the stage singing about Lionel Richie and Stevie Wonder. “Love’s in Need of Love Today” possessed lyrics true now as when it was composed in 1976 by Stevie. Kevin is a master of the stage with a solid strong thrilling voice.

He called upon five dancing men all in black singing the title song from an upcoming show “It’s Raining Men”. Another upcoming show will be “Magic Male Revue”. The audience was in awe and clamored for more. Bibiana made an appearance with “I Was Here”, a Beyoncé tune. She is someone to watch.

Brenda Gaviño also introduced her new show entitled “It’s My Party”. She delivered a stunning deeply emotional interpretation not soon to be forgotten “O Mio Babbino caro” (My dear papa), a soaring operatic aria from Puccini’s “Gianni Schicchi”. She displayed her far-reaching talent and confessed that she had never sang in this genre in public. An absolutely marvelous performance worthy of boosting her higher up the singing ladder. A lively appropriate anthem was dedicated to “All the Mexicans who have suffered”, “El Viajero-México!” Be proud of your heritage and culture.

Karma La Perra appeared without any disguise and say “How Deep is Your Love” from The Bee Gees. A new addition to their roster, Karma showed her intense and clear singing abilities. Borrowing from Robbie Williams, she sang a stirring on-target “Loving Angels Instead”. “When I come to call, she won’t forsake me. I’m loving angels instead.” She will be starring in a new show soon.

Marc Lopéz, a performer in several shows here, sang from “The Best of Broadway” with “You’ll Never Walk Alone”. He conveyed that this song from Frank Sinatra sums up his attitude toward life: “That’s Life”, arising from his “Crooners” show. He swung the room and blasted it with uplifting positive attitudes to the downs of life: “Many times I thought of cutting out but my heart won’t buy it.”

Kevin continued his M.C. job and called out Victor Do Espirito who revealed he has a special one-night-only show on his birthday saluting Bruno Mars. Previewing one of many hit tunes on the songlist, he declared (You are my) “Treasure”.

Newcomer making a splash already, Louis Whitaker chatted about how happy he was to be here and previewed yet another upcoming show “Broadway Baby” from Stephen Sondheim’s “Follies”. Cute and refreshing was the persistent searching for the stage. Then he gave us Sondheim´s “No One is Alone” from “Into the Woods” once again with lyrics extremely apropos for tonight: “Maybe we forgot. They are not alone. No one is alone. Someone is on your side.”

Diana Valeria Villamonte and Victor Lo Espirito reminisced about their “Foreigner /Journey” smash hit running show with “Don’t Stop Believing”. Diana continued the upreaching music of this evening with “Never Enough”: “Now when you stumble, you’re never alone.” Another newcomer who will be singing soon about “Queens of Country” brought another genre, that of country music, not only to this stage but to Act2PV’s widening repertoire with Bobbi Goddard and her band The Others. We heard a wonderful composition “Angels Among Us” by Alabama, sporting words relevant to our times, now and forever: “They come to you and me, in our darkest hours To show us how to live, to teach us how to give To guide us with the light of love.” She stated that she sang “Country poetry”. A beautiful “The Story” from Brandi Carlile deliberated through much hardship “It’s true, I was made for you.”

Gabe Arciniega was enthusiastically welcomed upon entry. He has an enormous following his shows “Gabe and the Rock Stars” and “The Gabest Show On Earth”. He spoke of the recent tragedy in our area and dedicated this song “To all the victims and their families. This is a battle cry since people are in trouble and need our help.” He called upon everyone to “Rise Up” knowing life will improve.

Throughout the night, Cate and Sharon announced many winners of the auctions and raffles. Danny was often there assisting and urging them on. Many local businesses donated certificates for the relief fund. Tonight’s total was over 150,000 pesos and more are welcome.

“Thank you to everyone who’s made this evening possible.” Closing out the delightful extravaganza of talent, Kevin emitted a solemn, emotional “Imagine”, finalizing the evening with the thematic words: “You may say I’m a dreamer. But I’m not the only one. I hope someday you’ll join us and the world will live as one.

A special reunion of “Mamma Mia” group Donna and the Dynamos singing, twirling and singing to ABBA’s “Super Trouper”. “One night, one song only.” It was spectacular seeing this fun filled reprise. The star ladies are Stephanie Watts, Cate Valcic and Sharon Scherer Gerber.

Credits to the owners Danny Mininni, Oscar Cisneros and Alfonso Lopéz including all the staff and volunteers who would devote endless hours to pull off this fundraiser in such a short time.
