Hotel Construction in Cancun Has Restarted

According to the Governor of Quintana Roo, Carlos Joaqun González, 90 percent of hotel construction in Cancun has restarted. The pandemic caused the suspension of constructions. Now, approximately 5,000 new rooms will be available in the State.

AM Resorts, Grupo Posadas with the Fiesta Americana brand, Grupo Lomas with the Nickelodeon Hotels & Resorts Riviera Maya complex, and Grupo Tafer with its Garza Blanca properties are some of the well-known chains that have restarted construction on their new hotels.

Also, Governor González informed Milenio that these hotels will complete construction by the beginning of 2022. The occupancy for these developments is almost sure, as connectivity has now nearly reached pre-pandemic levels. It is now at roughly 518 daily flights. Previously there were 600 flights.

About 280 hotels in Quintana Roo have special permissions to exceed occupancy by 20% of what is legal according to the epidemiological traffic light. The current orange and is set at 50%. However, hoteliers have admitted that some go above and beyond this limit.

The president of the Hotel Association, Roberto Cintrón Gómez, stated that the special permits are only valid during the holiday season. He also assured that all lodging companies rigorously adhere to biosecurity and hygiene rules. Some already do PCR tests on guests.
