American carrier Spirit Airlines has announced that it will fly to Puerto Vallarta for the first time in July, connecting the Mexican resort city with Houston, Dallas, and Los Angeles. This will be one of the first flights following the downgrading of Mexico’s air safety to Category 2 by the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

According to Camilo Martelo, the airline’s director of international airports, the destination was on the company’s radar and “we have finally completed the arrival.” They expect a 90 percent occupancy rate on their three flights, as the Mexican city aligns 100 percent with their business model. They are currently flying in Los Cabos and Cancun.

“As of July 1, we have seen a lot of occupancy, which gives us confidence that we will have a great acceptance, not just from the US market, but also from the local market, which will have a different alternative with competitive pricing,” he said via video conference.

It’s worth noting that Spirit Airline has made this announcement right after the downgrade to Category 2, which means that Mexican airlines would be unable to expand their operations to the United States, but companies from other countries will be able to launch new flights or boost frequency.

In this regard, Martelo stated that they have confidence in the security and measures implemented by the Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacifico, which manages the Puerto Vallarta Airport (GAP).

“We have made several visits to the airport and we are completely satisfied with the operation they have and with all the security measures they apply, so we are very satisfied and will start our operations on July 1,” he said.

What they say on the Puerto Vallarta side.

While Cryshtian José Amador Lizardi, general administrator of the Puerto Vallarta International Airport, stated that they are working with the federal government to help with the recovery to Category 1, and that after the changes are complete, they will assist with the upcoming recovery for this destination.

Regarding the arrival of this airline, he commented that the firm will offer greater connectivity between both countries.

He recalled that this terminal has all the safety and hygiene measures the air sector and the corresponding authorities have established, as well as a laboratory for COVID-19 tests.

According to Luis Villaseor Nolasco, Acting Director of the Puerto Vallarta Tourism Promotion Trust, Los Angeles and San Francisco account for more than 40% of travelers visiting the Mexican resort.

He stated that there has been a recovery in air connectivity, as well as the arrival of new airlines such as Spirit Airlines, and that they expect that after the advancement of vaccination in the United States, passenger movement to Mexico will increase even more.

“We have a high expectation that this delay in the season with North Americans, combined with the fact that Canada will soon remove travel restrictions, will result in a significant flow of tourists,” he said.
